2014 Civic

The Honda Civic was first built and sold in the United States in 1973. It has seen continuous production ever since. Reliability and fuel economy are some of the reasons why Honda’s little car has been so popular. Both old and young alike laud the performance and practicality the Civic line of vehicles offers.

For 2014, Honda made some small changes to the model line. These changes are to address criticism of recent models for not being a significant enough change over previous versions. Continue reading as we cover each of the seven different Civic models offered in 2014 and cover price, safety and options.

2014 Civic Changes

The 2014 Civic went through a series of small changes from the previous model year. There are seven versions of the 2014 Civic. Two of them are two-door coupes and the rest are four-door sedans. There are no hatchbacks or other bodystyle variants in the United States. Here are the seven versions that are available.

2014 Civic Sedan

2014 Honda Civic

Starting at $18,390 the Civic Sedan is the cheapest Civic sedan on sale. A base Civic LX comes equipped with a manual transmission and a 143 hp engine. Government fuel economy testing rated the Civic at 28 mpg in the city, 36 on the highway and 31 combined mpg with the manual transmission.

Buyers can option a automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) for an additional $790 that raises the fuel economy to 30 city, 39 highway and 33 mpg combined.

All Civic sedans have power windows and door locks, keyless entry and air conditioning. Every Civic stereo includes Bluetooth connectivity for music streaming or hands-free phone. Also, Pandora functionality comes standard. Honda has made parking the Civic sedan easier by including a rear-view camera standard.

2014 Honda Civic IIHS Crash Rating

The 2014 Honda Civic sedan scored a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the 2014 Civic sedan is a Top Safety Pick+. The car scored the highest rating of Good in all crash testing. Optional features in higher trim levels also help the Civic from having a crash in the first place.

The $21,090 EX 2014 Civic sedan has the same engine and automatic transmission from the LX. That means the 39 mpg highway fuel economy rating remains. Also, the EX does not have an option for a manual transmission.

Upgrading to the EX adds a power moonroof. Keyless entry with a push button start is also added to the EX. Inside the car automatic climate control replaces the standard air conditioning. Instead of just the rear view camera, the EX adds Honda’s LaneWatch system. This includes blind spot monitoring along with the rear view camera system. The EX also has a better stereo system. The system in the EX has a 7″ color touch screen to navigate the interface.

The EX-L is the highest trim level for the 2014 Civic sedan. It starts at $22,740 ($24,240 if you want navigation). The biggest two changes for the EX-L are foglights and a leather-trimmed interior. That navigation radio does add HD Radio functionality and supports SiriusXM.

2014 Civic Coupe

Starting at $18,190 the 2014 Civic coupe is the cheapest Civic on sale. A base Civic LX comes equipped with a manual transmission and a 143 hp engine. Government testing rated the Civic at 28 mpg in the city, 36 on the highway and 31 combined mpg with the manual transmission.

Buyers can opt for a automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT) for an extra $790 that boosts economy to 30 city, 39 highway and 33 mpg combined.

All Civic coupes have power windows and door locks, keyless entry and air conditioning. Every Civic stereo includes Bluetooth connectivity for music streaming or hands-free phone. Also, Pandora functionality comes standard. Honda has made parking the 2014 Civic coupe easier and safer by including a rear-view camera standard.

2014 Honda Civic coupe IIHS

The Civic coupe scored a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS.

The Civic coupe scored the highest rating of Good on all IIHS testing and received a Top Safety Pick rating. Unlike the sedan that scored a Top Safety Pick+ rating, the coupe doesn’t have forward collision warning available at all on any trim level.

The $21,090 EX 2014 Civic coupe and higher uses the same engine and transmission from the automatic Civic LX. That means the 39 mpg highway fuel economy rating remains. To save some money, you can equip the EX coupe with a manual transmission for $20,290. This will lower your fuel economy to the 28/36/31 mpg that the LX scored.

Upgrading to the EX adds a power moonroof and push button start. Single-zone automatic climate control replaces the standard air conditioning. Instead of just the rear view camera, the EX adds Honda’s LaneWatch system. This includes blind spot monitoring along with the rear view camera system. The EX has a 7″ color touch screen to navigate the interface of the stereo system.

The EX-L is the highest trim level for the 2014 Civic coupe. It starts at $22,540 ($24,040 if you want navigation). A manual transmission isn’t available on the EX-L, but foglights and leather seats are added. The navigation radio does add HD Radio functionality and supports SiriusXM.

2014 Civic Si Sedan

2014 honda civic

For those seeking performance out of their Honda, the Si version promises to deliver. Starting at $22,990 for the Si sedan ($23,190 with summer tires and $24,490 with navigation), the car packs 205 hp into a package that also gets 31 mpg on the highway.

The Si sedan is only available with a 6-speed manual transmission. Motor Trend tested the Civic Si and achieved a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds. The government rates the fuel economy on the 2014 Civic Si at 22 mpg in the city, 31 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined.

The Civic Si sedan shares the same body as the base Civic sedan, meaning that it earns the same rating in IIHS crash testing. That includes earning the Top Safety Pick+ award. Click here to see the report and watch the crash test video above.

Civic Si sedans are fully-loaded. The only selectable option is the navigation system. This means the cars come with automatic climate control, a power moonroof, push button start, power windows and door locks and a touch screen stereo. That stereo has Bluetooth streaming connectivity and Pandora support. Also, the Civic Si sedan has Honda’s LaneWatch system. This includes a camera that allows the driver to see the passenger side blind spot to make sure it’s safe to change lanes. A backup camera also comes standard.

You should only plan on ordering summer tires if you live in a climate that doesn’t see below 40 degree weather or snow. In those situations, summer tires will not grip and can cause an accident. If you do live in those climates and want the performance of summer tires, you’ll need to buy winter tires for the cold season. We’ve tried driving summer tired equipped vehicles in the cold and snow before and it’s more difficult than it needs to be. Snow tires make a huge difference.

2014 Civic Si Coupe

Like the Civic Si sedan, the coupe is for the Civic buyer who wants performance out of their car. Starting at $22,790 ($22,990 with summer tires, $24,290 with navigation, and $24,490 with navigation and summer tires). The Si coupe only comes with a 205 hp engine and a 6-speed manual transmission.

2014 Civic Si coupes are fully-loaded. All cars come with automatic climate control, a power moonroof, push button start, power windows and locks and a good stereo. The stereo has Bluetooth streaming supports Pandora. Also, the 2014 Civic Si coupe has Honda’s LaneWatch system. This includes a camera that allows the driver to see the passenger side blind spot to make sure it’s safe to change lanes. A backup camera also comes standard. Before selecting summer tires, make sure you live in a warmer climate or be prepared to purchase winter tires.

2014 Civic HF Sedan

2014 honda civic

The 2014 Civic HF is a base Civic sedan designed for the best non-hybrid fuel mileage as possible. It includes the same engine as the normal Civic and the options of the Civic LX. This includes power windows and door locks, air conditioning, a rear-view camera and stereo system that supports Pandora and Bluetooth.

Fuel economy for the Civic HF is 31 mpg city, 41 mpg highway and 35 mpg combined. This economy comes only with a CVT automatic transmission.

Constructed on the same body as the Civic sedan, the HF scores the same rating in crash testing. To view the video and see the results, click here. The 2014 Civic sedan scored a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS.

2014 Civic Hybrid Sedan

2014 honda civic

The 2014 Civic Hybrid is Honda’s small car fuel sipper. To help justify the $24,635 ($25,835 with leather) starting price, Honda includes features not available on other Civics.

The Civic Hybrid uses a 1.5L Atkinson-cycle 4-cylinder engine making 110 hp. This engine connects to the front tires through a CVT automatic transmission. The EPA has rated the Civic Hybrid at 44 mpg city, 47 mpg highway and 45 mpg combined.

The Hybrid is the reason why the Civic sedan is an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. The car includes a forward collision warning system. The car can detect a crash about to occur and prepare the car for impact. It will also sound an audible alarm to alert the driver to slam on the brakes. The goal of the system is to warn the driver in time to brake without an accident. The system will not automatically brake the car.

In addition to the LaneWatch system and rearview camera, the Civic Hybrid has a lane departure warning system. If the car starts to stray out of the lane in traffic an alarm will sound to warn the driver. LED daytime running lights round out the significant changes from the Civic sedan.

The 2014 Civic Hybrid has a radio that supports Bluetooth phone and streaming audio. Pandora support comes with the navigation system radio. Automatic climate control keeps occupants comfortable.

2014 Civic Natural Gas

2014 honda civic

In many parts of the country, compressed natural gas (CNG) costs less to buy than gasoline and is healthier for the environment. To cater to those looking to spend the least amount on fuel, Honda created the $26,640 ($29,290 with leather) Civic Natural Gas.

The CNG-powered 2014 Civic sedan runs on a 110 hp 1.8L four-cylinder engine. Power goes to the front wheels through a 5-speed automatic transmission. The government rates the CNG Civic at 27 mpg city, 38 mpg highway and 31 combined.

Safety features include Honda’s LaneWatch system and rear-view camera. Since the CNG Civic is just a Civic sedan, it scores the same rating in IIHS crash testing. The Civic achieves the highest possible score of Good in all testing.

The basic Civic Natural Gas has standard air conditioning and a touch screen radio that supports Bluetooth and Pandora. Upgrading to leather gets you leather trimmed seats and steering wheel, heated exterior mirrors and satellite navigation.

The seven different trim options for the 2014 Civic means there’s a Civic for every buyer. No other automaker offers this type of variety with their small car offerings. While some automakers may do one type of car better than the Civic, Honda dominates offering a consistent experience across all the 2014 Civic models.
