Safety doesn’t have to be expensive. All of the small SUVs listed here start at less than $23,000. In the event of a crash, you and your family will be safer in these vehicles than many others on the road.

The accident avoidance technology, such as auto braking and forward collision warning, are often part of an upgraded technology package. The IIHS doesn’t look at that when testing the technology and giving the rating. All they care about is if the technology is available. You may look at the Forester and notice it doesn’t have crash avoidance technology. Even so, it still achieved the highest score in an actual crash.

Fuel economy is good on these vehicles as well. None of these SUVs had a highway rating less than 30 mpg. All five of these vehicles would be a strong buy for someone looking for a SUV that’s safe, reliable and affordable.
