Mercedes-Benz unveiled the V-Class this week in Geneva, and it is unlike any other minivan currently on the road. Minivans are a unique type of vehicle in the United States. For those that purchase them, they offer the most versatility and configurations available for a vehicle of that size. Most SUVs hold 7 passengers, whereas many minivans will carry 8. Sliding doors make it easy to load children into car seats and a giant rear hatch makes it easy to put strollers in the back. For those with children, a minivan really makes the most sense. Not many people would define a minivan as being cool. The V-Class is looking to change that perception, and we hope that Mercedes makes the smart decision to sell the car here.
The most luxurious and feature-packed minivan currently on sale in the United States is the Chrysler Town and Country. Virtually unchanged for quite a few years, those wanting a premium van experience had to either purchase the Chrysler or cram into a luxury SUV. The V-Class is configurable with many of the features available on the flagship S-Class model range, with space for the entire family.
Buyers can option Mercedes’ COMMAND interface for all of their infotainment needs. The Mercedes system will also be one of the first to support Apple’s CarPlay technology. Additionally, buyers can choose to have LED headlights, radar guided cruise control, Burmester surround sound, and a climate control system that knows where the sun is to provide the best comfort.
Powering the current version is a Bluetec diesel engine, which will provide ample torque to haul around the weight of the van, while providing good fuel economy in the process. 200hp and 354lbs/ft of torque is available when the driver selects the Sport mode from the dash. Yes, this minivan has a sport mode!
The V-Class is going on sale this week in Europe, and Mercedes has not officially stated whether or not the van will make it to the United States. We strongly encourage them to bring it here, because we think the market could use a luxury minivan. Also, we are extremely intrigued by the idea of an AMG version of the V-Class!
