The 2014 BMW M5 is a beast of a sedan as the German automaker demonstrates in its latest promotional video.  The M5 isn’t a pure sports car, but it transitions seamlessly between hauling the family around town to roaring through corners on the race track.

The base 2014 BMW M5’s 4.4 twin-turbo V8 delivers 560 horsepower, which is more than enough to thrill the most discerning performance enthusiast. But for those itching for a little more power, BMW offers the Competition Package, which adds 15 additional horsepower, stiffens the suspension and swaps in an M-spec rear differential. The package is a $7,300 option on top of the $92,900 base price.

I had the pleasure of driving a 2014 BMW M5 with the Competition Package at Thunderhill Raceway recently and the above video does a fantastic job communicating what it’s like to mash the M5’s pedal and go from zero to 140mph on the straightaway.

The Competition Package is actually a good value considering how much BMW charges for other options that do a whole lot less. Upgraded leather seats cost $5,000 on this car and Carbon Ceramic Brakes will set you back $9,250.

Does anyone really need the M5 to drive around town? Not really, but it’s a thrill to try and tame this beast.
