Tesla Motors has not formally released a roadmap of the next all-electric models it will be building, but a recent trademark request highlighted by Cleantechnica and originally published at EV Obsession might give us the name of one of Tesla’s next models. According to the sites, Tesla has filed a trademark request for a vehicle called the Tesla “Model E.”

The Trademarkia page for Tesla notes the application was filed on August 5th.

We know a little bit about Tesla’s futures plans for models. The Model X is an SUV variant currently in development at Tesla. Tesla features it on their home page and has shown models of the Model X around the country already (in fact, you can see the Tesla X reveal here). Deliveries are expected to begin in 2014, according to Tesla, and is now taking reservations for the vehicle.

Other than the Roadster, Model S and Model X, Tesla has not stated much about other models. Elon Musk has alluded to his plans, though. When in Texas earlier this year fighting the state and dealer system for the right to sell Teslas direct to consumer, Elon mentioned the possibility of building a Tesla factory in Texas to build a pickup. It wasn’t just a carrot held in front of Texas politicians, as Tesla’s chief designer mentioned the possibility in late 2012 as well.

That likely won’t be what the Model E is, however. A bigger element of the Tesla strategy is their stated desire to build an electric vehicle somewhere in the $30,000 range, allowing Tesla to begin competing for more customers. A more mass market Tesla, it is something the company seems to be eyeing for 2015 or 2016. The next car after the Model X.

The fact that a trademark is being applied for is a good sign that Tesla is moving forward on the plan, and it’s likely it will be called the Model E.
