UPDATE 01/07/2014: Ford’s Raj Nair, group vice president of Global Product Development speaks with Auto Geeks at CES 2014 about AppLink and why it is not yet AppLink supported. Click here to read the update.

Ford is working on AppLink support for MyFord Touch, the company’s high-end touch screen infotainment system. AppLink is a feature that connects the car to iPhone, Android and BlackBerry to allow users to control apps like Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn and more to deliver hands-free control while driving.

Sync AppLink is only available on select Ford vehicles at this time and it does not work on the upgraded MyFord Touch system that many of Ford’s Titanium trim level vehicles come with.

That will change sometime in the future, but Ford isn’t ready to talk about a specific timetable or if this a MyFord Touch update will bring AppLink support to current vehicles.

Speaking with Motor Review at a recent Ford media event, Jim Buczkowski, Henry Ford Technical Fellow and director of Electrical and Electronics Systems, we received confirmation that this is in the plans.

Buczkowski wouldn’t share if this would come specifically to a 2014 Ford release, or if users could expect it on the 2013 or earlier models. During the chat, he did admit that Ford is working with Apple on the new iOS  in the Car feature that is coming to iOS 7.

The video above shows Sync AppLink in action on a Ford vehicle. Sync AppLink users will enjoy the ability to control Pandora radio channels or Spotify playlists without the need to touch the phone while driving.

Siri offers some control like this to users, launching apps, but it cannot play a specific station or playlist in apps like Pandora or Spotify.

Ford has a good track record of updating Sync, which gives hope for MyFord Touch AppLink  support for current Ford owners.
